NUIC Estate – Wine from Bosnia Herzegovina

Bosnia herzegovina : A vineyard land !

Since the antiquity period, Bosnia has been a land of vineyards in spite of the arid karst relief and the burning sun that can fall on the region during the summer period. Wine culture was permanent throughout the Middle Ages and was an essential activity for aristocratic families. The arrival of the Ottomans in the 16th century put an end to Bosnian viticulture, since the beginnings of the invasion and the 18th century, wine production has steadily declined to the point of almost disappearing. The wine-growing is concentrated on three territories mainly in the Neretva valley, the Trebinje region (south-west, on the border with Croatia and Montenegro), bathed by the Trebisnjica, a partially underground river and the surroundings of Mostar between Stolac and Caplina Ljubuski and Medjugorje. NUIC estate is located in the south-west of Herzegovina, more specially in Crnopod, between Medjugorje and Ljubuski.

Here the cultivated grape varieties are, for the majority, native varieties. The vineyard covers area of 35 hectares, an ideal place for the cultivation of grapes, thanks to a red rocky ground, an altitude of 140 meters, a southwest exposition, warm winter and sunny summers.
The history of the NUIC vineyard began in 2004, on an area of 7 hectares planted with Herzegovinian varieties. Vineyard NUIC have a vision of viticulture based on 2 fundamental beliefs : high quality grapes, respectful of the complex ecosystem that represents an ideal habitat for the natural reproduction and the realization of wines of superior quality with methods using modern technology.
